Roblox has been around since 2006, and it’s considered a family-friendly platform that relies on user-generated content. While it’s easy for parents or non-players to see Roblox as a single game, it’s more of a free version of the App Store or Google Play that comes with its community.
The platform has a few distinctive elements: virtual games for sale, a studio for creating Roblox games, and a massive catalog of free, collaborative games. You start by customizing an avatar, which you use to interact with other users. The site features chat rooms and forums, and all games are multiplayer.

Downloading the Roblox software
Just because Roblox is based in the cloud doesn’t mean you don’t have to do anything to get the full experience. You’ll need to install the Roblox Player to access the games and if you’re interested in the development aspect, you’ll also need to install the Studio.
Installing the Roblox Player
First, you need to visit the Roblox website. From there you will:
- Log into your account.
- Once you’re in, click on any game and you’ll see a green button labeled, “play.” Click the button.
- The play button prompts a download to begin. You’ll see a pop-up window letting you know the download is in progress. Another pop-up may appear asking you to choose a program.
- Select “Roblox” and confirm.
- Once the player finishes installing, you’ll be able to play.
Installing Roblox Studio
Installing Roblox Studio is slightly more involved than getting the player onto your PC. Again, you’ll go to the Roblox website and sign in.
- Click on any of the games on the platform, then click “Menu_Icon_Remastered,” which you’ll find in the top right corner.
- Select “edit,” and a pop-up will appear letting you know that the install has started downloading.
